Lattice dynamics and Mg/Ti order in orthorhombic pseudobrookite-type MgTi2O5

چکیده
Mg/Ti order/disorder and the lattice dynamics of orthorhombic pseudobrookite-type MgTi2O5 have been studied by experiment and modeling. A mechanochemical activation by high speed ball milling allowed us to synthesize pure MgTi2O5 from MgO and TiO2 anatase at a comparatively low temperature of 1173K. The Mg/Ti order of MgTi2O5 was characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations based on fully ordered MgTi2O5 allow an assignment of all experimentally observed Raman and infrared modes and a re-evaluation of earlier findings. A standard entropy of 134.24 Jmol K and a bulk modulus of 161(1)GPa was predicted for fully ordered MgTi2O5 and is in good agreement with experimental findings based on quasi-adiabatic calorimetry of samples with different Mg/Ti ordering states and earlier high pressure studies, respectively. A linear relation of the B1g(5) Raman blue-shift with the Mg/Ti disorder was observed, which can be used to rapidly quantify the ordering state of MgTi2O5.

Using DFT methods we have studied structure, equation of state, and phase behavior of BaTiO3. We have identified the pressure induced phase transformations from the rhombohedral to orthorhombic structure at ca. 5 GPa and from tetragonal phase to cubic phase at ca. 7.5 GPa. INTRODUCTION BaTiO3 is an important example perovskite structured ceramic displaying ferroelectric property. At high temper...
متن کاملSpecifics of freezing of Lennard-Jones fluid confined to molecularly thin layers
Freezing of a Lennard-Jones fluid between solid surfaces was studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. We explored the formation of frozen phases of hexagonal and orthorhombic symmetry in mono-, bi-, and tri-layer structures. The freezing transition, the type of lattice, and translational and orientational ordering were identified on the basis of orientationa...

In complex materials, how correlation between charge, spin, and lattice affects the emergent phenomena remains unclear. The newly discovered iron-based high-temperature superconductors and related compounds present to the community a prototype family of materials, where interplay between charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom can be explored. With the occurrence of structural, magnetic, a...

Titanium with Nb, Zr, and Ta alloying substitutions possesses high plastic slip resistance and high transformation strains upon bcc (b) to orthorhombic ða00Þ transformation. In the current study, we determine the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for slip in Ti alloyed for a wide composition range of Nb, Ta, and Zr. The CRSS is obtained with a proposed Peierls–Nabarro formalism incorporatin...
